Inside Kal’s head

The Economist has been creating an occasional series of videos that capture in stop motion the inking portion of my weekly editorial cartoon. We set up lights and a rig to hold a GoPro camera above my drawing table. I then spend three hours inking my final artwork using a lightbox to project my pencil sketches onto smooth bond paper. The hours are distilled to a 2 minutes video of frenetic drawing. I then have to quickly draft and record a script that matches the evolving artwork. I send the voice and images to London, where a crack team of video magicians quickly turn my mush into something coherent that is sent out on their social media channels.
