This week’s Economist cartoon

kal econ cartoon 11-4-10 web

The Economist goes to press every week on a Wednesday. Which means for 33 years I have been at my drawing board trying to conjure up cartoons for the upcoming edition for the magazine. Fortunately for me, US General Election are always held on Tuesdays which means by Wednesday the results are in(except for that crazy 2000 election).

The US Election results are closely watched around the world and thus make great fodder for cartoons. Above is this week’s rendition. I think the conflict between these two protagonists will likely supply ample material for cartoonists and satirists in the months ahead.

US and China over the years

November 13th, 2009 | Category: China, Economist, Finished art

Kal econ cartoon 11-12-09 webAs Obama heads to China next week, I wanted to create a cartoon to mark the visit. ¬†I began to ponder the long line of Presidents, starting with Nixon in 1972, who have made the trip. The cartoon above from this week’s edition of The Economist was spun out of that thought…

Spot the Difference

October 29th, 2008 | Category: Economist, Finished art

There is a difference between the two cartoons above. One cartoon (the bottom cartoon) ran in The Economist this week.  The second cartoon is being distributed to publications in the US and elsewhere through syndication.

HINT: American english and English english employ different spelling in some select words. If you cannot locate the difference between the two cartoons, take a break and pour yourself a whiskey, or is it whisky?

McCain and Obama caricatures

September 14th, 2008 | Category: caricature

I have been working on my caricatures of the two Presidential candidates. It takes time to fully understand the dynamics and subtleties of a target’s face. ¬†After months of observation, I am beginning to get the hang of these two personalities and the peculiarities of their faces. My experience suggests these caricatures should continue to improve. Let’s see!

Obama caricature

June 06th, 2008 | Category: Economist, Finished art, sketches

This week I produced a caricature of Obama and Hillary that captures the current news quite well. ¬†I am particularly happy with the Obama caricature. ¬†It always takes a while to get a fix on a new politician’s face and I am becoming more attuned to Obama’s features. ¬†I enclose below some the preliminary sketches for this week’s cartoon as well as my first caricature of Obama from 2007.
